The Oldest West Indian Carnival in Europe

It is carnival time in Yorkshire! Whilst many people know about the Notting Hill Carnival in London, it is the Leeds Carnival which is actually the oldest West Indian Carnival in Europe. Started back in 1967 by a Leeds University Student from Saint Kitts, Arthur France, the event is a joyful and spectacular celebration of West Indian culture. The event takes place over the late summer bank holiday weekend, rather than more traditionally timed Carnivals in other countries which take place before Lent. As this is an outdoor event this makes great sense - especially to anyone who has experienced the cold, often snow filled, streets of Leeds in February!

Costumes Destroyed

There were concerns that this year’s Carnival would have to be cancelled after a recent arson attack destroyed many costumes. However, the organisers have confirmed that the event is going ahead as planned. The 44th Leeds Carnival will take place on Monday 29th August 2011.
